[ Search, Explained ]
Search optimisation is the work of making your business the answer people find when they go looking: in Google's results, in the AI summary above those results, and now in ChatGPT and Gemini when someone skips the search box entirely. In 2026 it is one discipline with three audiences, and the blue links you grew up with are only one of them. This article explains what the work involves, what it costs, and how to find out where you stand, without a single line of jargon left undefined.
The definition used to be simpler. For twenty years, search optimisation meant persuading Google to rank your page higher in a list, because Statcounter's July 2026 data still hands Google an 88.22% share of Australian search, with Bing a distant 8.74%. The list is still there. What changed is what sits above it, and beside it. Google now often answers the question itself before showing any links. And a growing slice of your customers never open Google at all: ChatGPT now reaches more than a billion people a week on OpenAI's own August 2026 figures. When someone asks it to recommend a plumber, a florist or a bookkeeper, it names two or three businesses. Everyone else may as well be closed that day.
No, and the numbers say so. Graphite's analysis of more than 40,000 US websites, reported by Search Engine Land in January 2026, put the decline in organic search traffic at about 2.5% year on year, which is a ripple, not a collapse. People still search, still click, still buy. What died is the version of SEO that treated rankings as the finish line. The finish line moved: now the question is whether your business is the answer, wherever the question gets asked. Ask it on Google, the answer might be an AI summary quoting somebody's page. Ask it in ChatGPT, the answer is a couple of sentences naming a couple of businesses. The optimisation part is making sure those sentences include you.
Here is the part a marketer selling you a monthly retainer might skip: if your work comes entirely from referrals and you are booked out three months ahead, you can close this tab with my blessing. Search optimisation builds a queue, and you already have one. It matters when you need strangers to find you, trust you and call you, which is most businesses, most of the time, but it has never been all of them.
The industry has minted a new acronym for each new place an answer can appear, and small business owners are expected to keep up. When I ran the numbers in KWFinder in July 2026, "what is search optimization" drew 770 searches a month in NSW, while "generative engine optimization" drew 110 a month, up 81% on the year, and "answer engine optimization" just 30, up 67%, with advertisers already paying around $18 a click to appear against it. The money has arrived before the audience, which tells you the acronyms are marketing as much as method. Here is what each one actually covers:
| The term | What it covers | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| SEO (search engine optimisation) | Ranking in the traditional results list | Still the foundation. Pages that load fast, say what you do and where, and earn links and reviews |
| AEO (answer engine optimisation) | Being the answer that gets read out: featured snippets, AI summaries at the top of Google | Answer real questions in plain sentences, early on the page, in formats machines can lift |
| GEO (generative engine optimisation) | Being named by AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini | Be quotable and verifiable: complete profiles, consistent details, reviews, readable pages |
Read the right-hand column again and notice something: it is the same list three times, worded three ways. That is the most useful thing I can tell you about the alphabet. You do not need three strategies or three invoices. You need one honest body of work that Google, ChatGPT and Gemini can all find, understand and trust. Once the real names are on the table, I just call them the machines, and the machines all read the same homework.
If it is ChatGPT specifically you are wondering about, I have written the whole method out: how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT.
Strip the acronyms away and search optimisation in 2026 is three layers, stacked in order:
Two details about the trusted layer deserve their own sentences. First, your Google Business Profile is doing more work than ever, because Google retired the old public Q&A section in late 2025 and replaced it with AI answers built from your profile's details, services, reviews and photos. I have written a full seven-check profile audit you can run yourself. Second, nobody can buy their way past any of this. Google's own local search documentation says "there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking", and the same is true of AI mentions. Anyone promising a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT's answer is selling weather forecasts they wrote themselves.
The honest frame is renting versus owning. Paid search buys visibility for exactly as long as you pay: at the $18 a click advertisers currently bid on AI-optimisation terms, a $1,200 monthly budget buys about 66 clicks and stops dead the day the card declines. I wrote about that trade in my guide to search engine marketing. Organic work costs money too, but the spend accumulates instead of evaporating: the same $1,200 a month invested in pages, profile care and review flow is still answering questions next year. My organic growth partnership is $1,200 a month, a new website with the optimisation built in starts at $2,900 and takes 3 to 4 weeks, and hosting costs my clients $0 on a standard website. And the demand you are building toward is real: HubSpot's January 2026 research found 42% of CRM software buyers already using AI search in their evaluation, and buyers of everything else are close behind.
Run the arithmetic on the keyword this article targets: 770 searches a month, and a page that earns even a 20% share of those clicks is greeting roughly 154 potential customers a month, every month, for the price of writing it well once. That is the compounding that makes owners patient.
Test it the way a customer would. Ask ChatGPT and Gemini, in plain words, who they would recommend for your service in your town, and note whether you are named. Run your service and town through Google in a private window and read what the AI summary says. If you want the reading done for you, my free Found Score checks how answer-ready your website looks in about two minutes. If you would rather the whole picture were checked for you, The Found Report goes through everything you own online and includes exactly that live AI test, run for you with the evidence screenshotted. $550 flat, five business days, no retainer attached.
Start wherever you like, but start before your competitors do. The machines lean on material that has aged enough to trust, which makes this the rare race where the prize goes to whoever left earliest, not whoever spent hardest.
