AI Visibility Audit: What It Is, What It Costs in Australia, and How to Run One Yourself

An AI visibility audit checks whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI features can find, understand and recommend your business when someone asks who to use. You can pay for one, and later in this article I will tell you plainly what that costs in Australia. But the first version is free, takes an afternoon, and I am going to show you exactly how to run it. That order is deliberate: you should know where you stand before anyone asks you to spend money on the answer.

What Is an AI Visibility Audit?

When a customer asks an assistant "who should I call for a leaking roof in Coffs Harbour", the answer comes back as a short list of names. An AI visibility audit is the discipline of finding out, first, whether your name is in those answers, and second, why or why not. The first part takes minutes. The second part is where the real work lives, because assistants do not pick names out of the air. They lean on your website's structure, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and whether your details agree with each other everywhere they appear online. Google, ChatGPT and Gemini each read those foundations slightly differently, but they are all reading the same foundations, which is why the audit looks at your whole presence rather than your website alone.

Why This Suddenly Matters in 2026

The shift is measurable now, not hypothetical. Pew Research Center's Americans and AI report, released 17 June 2026, found 49% of adults now use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024, and 24% use them daily. That is American data, and Australia tends to track a step behind, but the direction is not in dispute.

Here is the arithmetic that makes it real for a small business. Say 600 people a month look for your kind of service in your area. If just one in ten of them asks an assistant instead of scrolling results, that is 60 shortlist answers a month, 720 a year, each one naming two or three businesses. You are either in those answers or a competitor is.

And before anyone declares search dead: Statcounter's July 2026 Australian data still has Google at 88.22% of searches, with Bing a distant second at 8.74%. This is not a story about abandoning Google. It is a story about the same foundations now being read by more machines, and Google's own AI Overviews sitting at the top of the results your customers already see.

"The jetty does not chase the fish. It stands where the fish already come."

The Five Things a Proper Audit Checks

Whether you run it yourself or pay for it, an AI visibility audit worth the name covers five surfaces. Miss one and the picture lies to you, because assistants cross-check.

saltlinestudio.com.au [ THE FIVE SURFACES ] What an AI visibility audit checks 1 · Your website structure, answers, hidden code 2 · Google Business Profile completeness, reviews, freshness 3 · Your social profiles do they agree with your website? 4 · Page speed on a phone, on Google's stopwatch 5 · The assistants, asked live ChatGPT and Gemini, as a customer The answer a customer hears "For that, I would look at..." Named, or not named. The audit tells you which, and traces back the why.

The fifth surface is the one most audits skip, and it is the scoreboard. Everything else explains the score. When I run this as part of an AI visibility audit inside The Found Report, the live questions to ChatGPT and Gemini are recorded word for word, including who gets named instead of you, because your competitors' answers teach you as much as your own.

What Does an AI Visibility Audit Cost in Australia?

Audit pricing in this country is a fog, and that fog is profitable for the people selling out of it. Here is the whole market in one table, including the lane that costs nothing.

The laneWhat you payWhat you get
Do it yourself$0 and an afternoonThe script in the next section. You learn whether you are named, today.
The Found Score checker$0, about two minutesTen questions, a score out of 100, a fix list. No email required.
The Found Report$550 flat, five business daysAll ten checks run individually, the live ChatGPT and Gemini tests recorded, a score out of 100 and a fix for every finding. Delivered online, Australia wide.
Agency-scale auditCommonly $2,000 to $3,000 and beyondVaries widely, and pricing is rarely published before a call.

The honest note on that table: the free lanes are not crippled samples. They will tell most businesses most of what is wrong. The paid lanes buy you the why underneath the what, a human judgement on every finding, and the order to fix things in.

How to Run One Yourself This Afternoon

Open ChatGPT and Gemini, and ask each one, in these words: "Who would you recommend for [your service] in [your town]?" Then work through this list, writing down what you find:

A phone on a desk showing an AI assistant asking what can I help with
  • Were you named? Was a competitor? Copy the exact wording of the answer, including the reasons the assistant gives for its picks.
  • Ask a second, more specific question a real customer would ask, like "who does [specific job] near [suburb]", and record that too. Niche questions are where newer businesses get named first.
  • Search your business name plus your town on Google. Does your Google Business Profile appear, and does everything on it match your website: name, phone, hours, services?
  • Open your website on your phone and time it. Slow pages get read less by customers and machines alike.
  • Check your socials say what your website says. Mismatched details quietly erode trust with Google, ChatGPT and Gemini, and the machines cross-check more than people expect.
  • Run the free Found Score checker, ten questions, about two minutes, and keep your score. Re-run it monthly so you can see movement.

If you want the full working-through, my free AI Visibility Afternoon Kit walks the whole process step by step. No email wall, because a kit you have to buy with your inbox is not free.

What an Audit Cannot Do

Now the part that costs me something to write. An AI visibility audit, mine included, cannot promise you a place in anyone's answer. The assistants change, their sources change, and nobody outside those companies controls the output. Treat any promise of guaranteed AI rankings the way you would treat a promise of guaranteed first place on Google, as the reason to close the tab.

Be careful, too, with anything sold as special AI optimisation magic. Google's own AI features documentation says it plainly: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup". Much of what is sold under the AI visibility banner is repackaged fundamentals, the same structure, speed, clarity and consistency work that good websites have always needed. That is not a scandal, the fundamentals are the product, but you should know what you are buying. The realistic timeline, covered properly in my guide to improving AEO, is that early signals commonly appear within two to six weeks when foundations are in place, and broader visibility compounds over months. Where AI answers fit in the wider picture of paid and organic search, my plain English guide to search engine marketing maps the whole results page.

Run the free audit this afternoon. If it comes back clean, you did not need me, and that is a good afternoon's work. If it comes back with gaps you want diagnosed properly, the Found Report is $550, delivered online anywhere in Australia in five business days, and it will tell you the truth even when the truth is that you should keep your money.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an AI visibility audit cost in Australia?
You can run a useful one yourself for nothing, using the ask-the-assistants script in this article and my free Found Score checker. The full audit, where ChatGPT and Gemini are tested live for your business and the foundations behind the answer are checked one by one, is $550 AUD flat as part of The Found Report, delivered online Australia wide in five business days. Agency-scale audits of comparable breadth commonly run $2,000 to $3,000 and beyond, and their pricing is rarely published.
Can I run an AI visibility audit myself?
Yes, and the first pass costs you an afternoon. Ask ChatGPT and Gemini who they recommend for your service in your area, exactly as a customer would, and record whether you are named. Then run the free ten-question Found Score checker and work through the free AI Visibility Afternoon Kit. What a paid audit adds is the layer underneath: why the assistants answer the way they do, and the exact order to fix what is holding you back.
Is an AI visibility audit different from an SEO audit?
They overlap on purpose, because AI assistants read the same foundations Google reads: your page structure, your structured data, your Google Business Profile, your reviews and whether your details agree with each other everywhere. An AI visibility audit adds the layer an SEO audit stops short of: asking the assistants live who they recommend and recording whether you are named, then tracing the answer back to its causes.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility after an audit?
When the foundations are already in place, early signals commonly appear within two to six weeks, such as being named for a niche or local question. Broader visibility compounds over months of steady work. Nobody can guarantee a place in an AI answer, and anyone who promises one is promising something they do not control.
