How Much Should Website Design Cost? A Guide for Growing Businesses

Website pricing is confusing on purpose. Search this question and you will find guides quoting anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000 and beyond, most of them written by the agencies doing the quoting, and most refusing to land on a number until you have sat through a sales call. So here is the honest version. For an Australian small service business, a properly built custom website with foundational SEO typically costs between $3,000 and $8,000. This article explains where that number comes from, why other quotes run so much higher, and the ongoing costs nobody puts on the first page of a proposal.

One thing before we start: I publish my own pricing openly, so you can weigh what follows against a real number rather than a mystery. That transparency is the standard I think you should hold every quote to.

"A cheap website is only cheap if you ignore every customer it fails to win."

The Four Lanes of Website Pricing

Almost every website design price in Australia falls into one of four lanes. A DIY template site costs nothing to build but carries a platform subscription for life, and you do the building around your day job. A template build, where a freelancer pours your content into a pre-made design, usually runs somewhere between $500 and $2,500. A custom build from an independent specialist, shaped around the way your clients actually search, typically lands between $3,000 and $8,000. And an agency project, with account managers, e-commerce and custom platforms, starts around $10,000 and climbs well past $25,000.

None of these lanes is dishonest. The confusion starts when a guide quotes agency numbers as if they were the only lane on the road. For a small service business that needs to be found on Google and turn visitors into enquiries, the third lane is usually the right fit, and it is the lane this article prices in detail. If timing matters as much as price, I cover how long a custom website design takes as well.

What You Are Really Paying For

A website quote is really three things bundled together. The first is design: how professional, trustworthy and easy to use your site feels. The second is strategy: keyword research, page structure and copy written around how your clients actually search. The third is the technical foundation: clean code, fast loading, mobile performance and the structured data that lets Google and AI assistants read and recommend your business.

Cheap builds include only the first ingredient, and usually as a template. That is why a $500 site and a properly built site can look similar on day one but perform completely differently by month six. When a quote seems expensive, ask which of the three ingredients it covers. When a quote seems suspiciously cheap, ask the same question. For the deeper version of what those ingredients do for you, see why web design is important.

The Costs Nobody Puts in the Quote

The build price is only the opening number. What determines the real cost of a website is everything that follows it: platform subscriptions, hosting plans, plugin licences, security certificates and maintenance retainers. On some models those add up to hundreds of dollars every month. Industry guides often present that fee stack as inevitable. It is not. It is a consequence of how the website is built.

A site built on a subscription platform rents its existence: stop paying and it disappears. The rents are public if you look: Wix's published plans commonly run $30 to $60 a month, and Shopify's start under $100 before apps. A site built on heavyweight software needs paid hosting, paid plugins and paid patching to stay secure. A hand-coded site has none of those moving parts, which is why every Saltline build comes with free hosting and no monthly fees, with the honest caveat that a future e-commerce or booking upgrade would introduce its own platform costs. Whoever you build with, get the ongoing picture in writing before you sign.

[ THE FIVE YEAR PICTURE ] Renting a website vs owning one Template platform $0 up front, then roughly $40 a month, every month ≈ $2,400 over five years Stop paying and the site disappears. You never own it. Custom build, free hosting From $2,900 once, $0 a month, plus a domain around $25 a year ≈ $3,025 over five years Built for your market, and you own it outright. The gap closes every month you keep paying. Only one path leaves you owning anything. saltlinestudio.com.au

Templates Versus Custom

Templates are real options for hobby projects and pre-revenue ideas. The trade-off is that you inherit someone else's structure, someone else's page speed, and zero search strategy, and page speed is judged mostly on phones now, where Statcounter's June 2026 count puts 51.51% of all web traffic. A custom build starts with your market and builds every page around the phrases your clients type into Google, which is the difference between a site that exists and a site that gets found.

The five year picture above is the part most pricing guides skip. A template platform looks dramatically cheaper on day one and quietly closes the gap every month after, while your competitors' custom sites collect the search traffic. Price the whole ownership period, not the first invoice.

Three questions, and one of them might save you thousands

Where is the business at?

Do you need a full online shop or a custom platform?

Is showing up on Google and in ChatGPT's answers part of the plan?

Five Questions to Ask Before You Sign

Whoever you are comparing, these five questions will tell you more than any price list:

  • Who owns the website when it is finished, including the domain, the design and the code?
  • What exactly does the quote include, and is the SEO foundation part of the build or a paid extra?
  • What will this site cost me monthly once it is live, in hosting, licences and maintenance?
  • Who actually does the work, the person quoting or a team I will never meet?
  • What happens if we part ways, can I take my website with me?

A good designer will answer all five without flinching. Hesitation on the ownership question in particular is worth treating as an answer in itself. And here is a quiet sixth test: run the designer's own website through my free AEO checker. If they sell search-ready websites, their own site should score like one.

A Realistic Budget for a Small Business

So how much do web designers actually charge? For an Australian small service business, a properly built custom site with foundational SEO typically lands between $3,000 and $8,000. At Saltline Studio the whole formula is published openly on the website design service page: $600 a page with a four page minimum, plus the mandatory Privacy Policy and Terms pages at $250 each, which makes the minimum website cost $2,900. No guessing games, no discovery-call pricing.

And because published pricing should mean all of it, here is the whole list, working. Pick your pages and features and the estimate below uses my actual published prices, the same ones that appear on my proposals. No email, no sales call, and the number is yours either way.

[ PRICE YOUR SITE, TO THE DOLLAR ]

Build your estimate with my published prices

How many pages does your story need? ($600 a page. Your Privacy Policy and Terms pages are added to every build at $250 each.)

Any of these? Pick as many as apply, or none.

The better question than "how much does a website cost" is "what does each enquiry cost me without one". A site that wins you two or three clients a month pays for itself quickly, and keeps paying long after a paid ad campaign would have burned the same budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do website design quotes vary so much in Australia?

Because the quotes describe different products. A template build, a custom site from an independent specialist and a full agency project involve different amounts of strategy, copywriting and technical work, and different business structures behind them. Before comparing prices, compare what each quote actually includes and who does the work.

What ongoing costs should I expect after my website launches?

At minimum, your domain name, usually somewhere between $20 and $50 a year. Beyond that, ongoing costs depend entirely on how the site is built. Platform subscriptions, hosting plans, plugin licences and maintenance retainers can add anywhere from nothing to hundreds of dollars a month, so ask for the full ongoing picture in writing before you sign.

Is a cheap template website good enough to start with?

For a hobby project or an idea you are still testing, yes. For a business that depends on enquiries, the missing layer is strategy: keyword research, page structure and copy built around how your clients search. That layer is usually what separates a site that exists from a site that gets found, and its absence tends to cost more in lost enquiries than it saves in build fees.
